BIRMINGHAM -- President Clinton will speak in Birmingham on April 20 at a state Democratic Party fundraiser that party officials hope will generate $250,000.
The two-term president will appear at a private reception at 5:30 p.m. for donors pledging $1,000 annually to the party and then speak to the party's $150-per-person Jefferson-Jackson dinner at 6:30 p.m. at the Cahaba Grand Conference Center.
Party spokesman Zac McCrary said Wednesday the event should generate about $250,000 based on a rush of calls for tickets.
Among political speakers, Clinton "is the gold standard," McCrary said.
Clinton spoke at the same fundraising dinner in 1990, when he was governor of Arkansas and was gearing up for a presidential race two years later.
"The Alabama Democratic Party is deeply honored and appreciative to President Clinton for giving us this opportunity to celebrate together, raise funds and build our party infrastructure in order to help build a better Alabama," party Chairman Joe Turnham said in a statement.
Clinton was last in Alabama on March 4 to be inducted into the National Voting Rights Hall of Fame in Selma and to join his wife, U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton of New York, a Democratic presidential candidate, at events commemorating the Selma-to-Montgomery voting rights march of 1965.
He also visited Bayou La Batre as part of his Hurricane Katrina relief efforts.
