California Majority Report: Hillary Clinton's Conference Call With Supporters

Hillary Clinton Talks California Primary, Invisible Americans, and Chuck Hagel

March 12, 2007 @ 5:30 PM

Senator Hillary Clinton (D-NY) spoke to supporters today on a conference call that covered an array of subjects.

Perhaps of greatest importance to our California audience, Clinton was well aware that she has to play ball with Democratic primary voters in our state, noting that “so many of the big states are moving up” and mentioning California first in that list. This marks an unsurprising pattern of big name presidential candidates dropping into our fair state, Dem-o-crats and Republicans alike.

Speaking of the "invisible Americans," people who hold mainstream views on subjects that have been ignored under the Bush administration, she expressed her support of:

  1. Universal health care
  2. Energy independence and renewable energy
  3. Affordable education
  4. Better communication with our friends and enemies abroad, noting, "We have to engage the world. We cannot lead by fiat."

She emphasized the importance of leadership in America, suggesting that "there is nothing America cannot do." JFK’s pledge to put a man on the moon within a decade was cited, and in contrast to the Bush Administration's squandering of eight years while alienating us from the rest of the world, it brought back fond fantasies of a world without the electoral college or butterfly ballots.

There was also some guarded post-partisan praise for Chuck Hagel, though she cast doubts on the Republican electorate’s willingness to annoint him. She also made a subtle jab at his self-professed independence, noting that he is a vocal critic of the Administration’s war policy, and yet he votes the party line whenever Democrats try to do anything on the war, even against a bill that he co-sponsored.
