Clinton says she should be elected on qualifications

DUBUQUE, Iowa (AP) -- New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, just hours from honoring the bravery of America's civil rights activists, said voters should focus on her qualifications, not her gender.

Asked Sunday night whether America was ready to elect a woman president, Clinton repeated the question.

"Will we ever elect a woman?" Clinton asked. "I'm not running as a woman. I'm running because I think I'm the best qualified and experienced person for president."

Clinton spoke to a crowd of 1,300 people who crammed shoulder-to-shoulder in an atrium and second-floor balcony on the Dubuque University campus.
