When Bill Clinton was running for president in 1992 he came up with an informal slogan to tout Hillary Clinton’s unusual qualifications as First Lady – “buy one, get one free”. Although their roles are now reversed, no such equivalent has been coined for Mrs Clinton’s 2008 campaign.

Yet in contrast to Al Gore’s ill-fated 2000 bid for the White House, Bill Clinton is already being put to good use on his wife’s campaign. “People everywhere ask if I will make Bill secretary of state if I win,” Hillary told a recent gathering of campaign donors, with her beaming husband standing by her side. “I think that’s illegal. But I sure can make him ambassador to the world.”
